The latest edition of the Acronyms and Initialisms in Education handbook reveals a lot about modern linguistic practice.

The 74-page sixth edition, published by the Librarians of Institutes and Schools of Education, contains some 4,500 acronyms and initialisations commonly used in the UK and Ireland in the fields of education and training. That is a third more than in the fifth edition.

However, one wonders whether there is any real point in LAAGOWRNAFE (Local Authority Associations Group of Work Related Non-Advanced Further Education), and at the wisdom of WEEP (Work Experience on Employers' Premises), DUMP (Durham Microcomputer Project), CHEESE (Cheshire Experiment in Educational Software) and QAC (HEFCE's Quality Assessment Committee).
